As Phil Coulson gently confronts Mike and tries to calm the situation, Mike gives what is still one of the most powerful speeches on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. With his voice cracking and tears in his eyes, he tells Coulson of the pain of losing everyone and everything, and the hopelessness of not having a place in the world, despite how hard he tries to do good and be a strong person. Coulson steps forward and tells Mike that the truly good guys, the real deal, “They’re not heroes because of what they have that we don’t. It’s what they do with it.” Coulson tells him, “You’re right, Mike. It matters who you are.” Mike, knowing who he really is and the good he’s capable of doing, says to Coulson, “I could, you know? Be a hero.”
And that’s exactly what Mike did. He continued to become a superhero, persevered through all the tragedies he endured, and ended up saving Coulson, his team, and the world countless times.
